83rd

Spirits and words, arranged on the 83rd shelf.

A small ten-seat bar in a quiet corner of Yokohama, Japan.

One Word, and the Night Changed

A quiet evening. Then, the sound of someone trying the door.

Our door stays locked until you ring the bell—a small detail that usually tells me someone is visiting for the first time. New faces are always welcome.

I opened the door to a rather handsome gentleman.

“We mainly serve whiskey. Is that all right?”

“Bourbon,” he said.

Now that’s a word that will make me smile. Bourbon is the heart of this little bar.

It seemed he’d found his way here with a purpose. Then I learned he was visiting from America.

From the home of bourbon to a little bar in Japan that loves it.

Some nights, a single word is all it takes.
